Light and heavy fuel oil
Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) is a category of fuel oils of a tar-like consistency identified as a "worse case substance". Also known as bunker fuel or residual fuel oil, HFO is the result or remnant from the distillation and cracking process of crude oil. Heavy fuel oils are mainly used as marine fuel, and HFO is the most widely used marine fuel at this time; virtually all medium and low-speed marine diesel engines are designed for heavy fuel oil. But older steam locomotives and oil-fired power plants also generate energy from heavy fuel oils. Heating oil is a mainly petroleum-based fuel for use in furnaces, central heating systems, and industrial furnaces. There are essentially two different types of heating oil available: extra-light heating oil, which is a middle distillate, and heavy fuel oil, which is classified as fuel oil. In the area of extra-light fuel, heating oil with a defined proportion of biogenic content is also offered: bio heating oil (“A Bio” extra-light heating oil). Heating oil is a mainly petroleum-based fuel for use in furnaces, central heating systems, and industrial furnaces. There are essentially two different types of heating oil available: extra-light heating oil, which is a middle distillate, and heavy fuel oil, which is classified as fuel oil. A more severe thermal cracking of heavy gas oil can be used to produce LPG and ethylene and light and middle distillates from heavy gas oil. A highly aromatic byproduct from thermal cracking is called ethylene tar. Therefore, heavy crude oil is generally sold at a discount to light crude oil to account for the extra operating costs and larger investments made in downstream processing units. Lately, that discount has declined due to a number
No. 1 fuel oil is a light petroleum distillate (straight-run kerosene) consisting primarily of hydrocarbons in the range C9–C16
7 May 2018 Light oil can be turned into gasoline more easily than heavy grades, while medium gravity grades produce more diesel and kerosene, fuels used Blending of a heavy fuel oil with a paraffinic distillate fuel, or blending of A few decades ago a transition from light fuel oils to heavy fuel oils for diesel marine. FO is used in heaters, boilers, furnaces, kilns and power generators. There are two types of Fuel Oil available in Zambia these are Light Fuel Oil (LFO) and Heavy 26 Aug 2019 It's among the world's heaviest types of crude oil in production. It requires greater amounts of refining than light oil. Heavy crude is thicker, 28 Aug 2019 “The plunge in fuel oil cracks has started to penetrate into the heavy world as refiners struggle to get their hands on enough light sweet crude.

Light, sweet crudes have a higher proportion of the light molecules used to make premium fuels like gasoline, naphtha, and – to some extent – diesel. Heavy crudes have a higher proportion of molecules that can only be used to make diesel fuel or residual fuels oils that are sold at a discount to ships or power producers.

Light heating oil is mainly consumed by households and commerce, but also by industry. A small proportion is used for electricity, district heating and gas

Category 1 (commonly known as Pre-MARPOL tankers) includes oil tankers of 20,000 tonnes deadweight and above carrying crude oil, fuel oil, heavy diesel oil, or lubricating oil as cargo, and of 30,000 tonnes deadweight and above carrying other oils, which do not comply with the requirements for protectively located segregated ballast tanks.
