The U.S. holds more oil reserves than anyone else in the world, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Venezuela. That conclusion comes from a new independent estimate from Rystad Energy, a Norwegian consultancy. Rystad estimates that the U.S. holds 264 billion barrels of oil, Crude oil - proved reserves is the stock of proved reserves of crude oil, in barrels (bbl). Proved reserves are those quantities of petroleum which, by analysis of geological and engineering data, can be estimated with a high degree of confidence to be commercially recoverable from a given date forward, from known reservoirs

To identify the countries that control the world’s oil, 24/7 Wall St. ranked countries by 2017 proven oil reserves — those quantities that geological and engineering information indicates with Proven Oil Reserves is determined through geological and engineering processes to produce an estimated value of oil stocks in the ground. Proven Oil Reserves showcases the commercially available (and theoretically recoverable) oil reserves of a given country based on its recognized reservoirs. For the purposes of the GFP ranking, oil is a highly-valued component when considering a prolonged military campaign and is used in conjunction with oil consumption and oil production values. Data Does the world have enough oil to meet our future needs? According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) International Energy Outlook 2019 (IEO2019), the global supply of crude oil, other liquid hydrocarbons, and biofuels is expected to be adequate to meet the world's demand for liquid fuels through 2050. Oil reserves. Oil reserves at the end of 2018 totalled 1730 billion barrels, up 2 billion barrels with respect to 2017. Regionally, South & Central America has the highest R/P ratio (136 years) while Europe has the lowest (11 years). The United States is the top oil-producing country in the world, with an average of 14.86 million b/d, which accounts for 15.3% of the world's production. This is down from 15.12 million b/d in 2015, but it was enough to land the United States in the top spot, which it has held for the past four prior years. The world has 53.3 years of oil left. BP (ticker BP ) has provided an intriguing update to its global oil reserves estimate in the company's latest yearly review of energy statistics. BP raised its reserve estimate by 1.1% to 1,687.9 billion barrels, which is enough oil to last the world 53.3 years at the current production rates.

With 300,878 million barrels of proven reserves, Venezuela has the largest amount of proven oil reserves in the world. The country's oil is a relatively new discovery. Previously, Saudi Arabia had always held the number one position. The oil sand deposits in Venezuela are similar to those in Canada. Many countries maintain government-controlled oil reserves for both economic and national security reasons. According to the United States Energy Information Administration, approximately 4.1 billion barrels (650,000,000 m 3) of oil are held in strategic reserves, of which 1.4 billion is government-controlled. These reserves are generally not counted when computing a nation's oil reserves.
